Recovery and restoration

When work began, the structure was in dire condition. Vegetation had invaded the roof and the pool area, compromising some parts of the structure.

The restoration, based on traditional techniques, involved:

  • removing the accumulated earthin the collection chamber during the period of abandonment;
  • restoring the missing sections of the cocciopesto plaster;
  • cleaning the rainwater drainage channel;
  • eliminating invasive vegetation from the pitched roof;
  • rebuilding the deteriorated exterior sections.

Over time, the roof had been damaged by plants and shrubs whose roots had displaced or crumbled the stones. The pool carved into the tuff had also suffered detachment, so it was necessary to realign the blocks and refinish the surfaces.

Original blocks found nearby were used for the reconstruction. The cocciopesto plaster was reproduced following the technique of master bricklayers and, after several tests carried out in the construction site laboratory, it was composed and applied inside the cistern.
