Ancient knowledge, still relevant today

In the heart of the "Terra delle Gravine" Regional Park, the restoration of a roof cistern brings new life to an ancient rainwater harvesting technique. A simple and effective system, used for centuries, it is now a concrete example of sustainability and land development.

Roof cisterns represent one of the most ingenious hydraulic solutions in rural tradition. Built to collect and conserve rainwater, they allowed for periods of drought and supported agricultural and pastoral activities. Today, their restoration:

  • enhances the historical and landscape heritage
  • contributes to sustainable water management
  • helps prevent flooding and landslides

Come and discover the roof cistern and listen to an ancient story that speaks to the future.

Recovery and Restoration

The project, carried out by the Gigante family, restored functionality to a cistern that had been unused for over fifty years. Located in the Gravine Natural Park, the structure is now open to tourists, students, and enthusiasts, becoming a meeting place for history, environment, and culture.

The restoration was carried out using traditional techniques, including:

  • cleaning and emptying the cistern
  • restoring the cocciopesto plaster
  • reconstructing damaged areas
  • eliminating invasive vegetation
  • restoring the water conveyance system

Great importance was given to the work of master masons, custodians of skills passed down over time.
