The restoration project

Roof cisterns are systems that collect and store rainwater. They are still common today on the Murge plateau and, in our case, in the Gravine Natural Park. They are built on gentle slopes, where they filter and capture rainwater, smallflows, and soil moisture. With their pitched roofs and gables, they take on an almost monumental appearance, similar to small temples.

These cisterns often have large capacities, even over 1,000 cubic meters of water, and are still used on many farms to water animals and irrigate fields.

The restored cistern is located in the "Terra delleGravine" Regional Park and it had not been used for over fifty years. The Gigante family, sensitive to protecting rural architecture, chose to restore it because it represents an element of local identity and a resource for a more sustainable future. For this reason today it is visited by tourists, students and travelers.
